NIIT enters into MoU with Guian New Area, China

Rahul Keshav Patwardhan
CEO Designate,
NIIT Limited

At NIIT, we are committed to supporting China in its human capacity building initiative. We were the first Indian IT training company to establish presence in China in the late nineties with a vision to create a manpower pool, to empower the software industry in the country. It gives us great pleasure to join hands with Guian New Area to further open and accelerate new-age career opportunities like Big Data. I believe this MoU will further enhance our relationship with the country.

MoU aims to develop Human Capital in line with China's vision to promote Guian as the national center for the Big Data industry –

NIIT entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guian New Area in the Guizhou province of China, to offer programs in new-age IT, with special focus on Big Data. The MoU was signed by Mr. Rahul Keshav Patwardhan, CEO Designate, NIIT Ltd during his recent visit to China and Mr. Ma Chang Qing, Head of the Guizhou Guian New District.

Under this MoU, NIIT will offer programs in Big Data as Guian has been identified by the Government of China as the national center for the Big Data Industry. Apart from this, NIIT will offer wide range of cutting-edge IT skills training across various fields. Currently, there are over 10,000 students studying in the New University Town campus which is likely to grow to nearly 25,000 over the next few years. Hence, there exists a potential to train a large number of students. NIIT will help support the vision of the Guizhou Government and would train these students to develop the next generation of data scientists and business analytics professionals for opportunities in the Big Data industry.

As the need for analyzing huge volumes of data presents immense opportunity for businesses today, there has been a growing demand globally for analytics professionals to power the Big Data industry. To cater to this emerging trend, NIIT has introduced cutting-edge programs in Big Data.

NIIT has a very unique business model for co-operation with Universities and Colleges in China called the - "NIIT Inside model", where NIIT programs are embedded in University/College IT curriculum. Students may undergo a 4 year Bachelor Degree program or a 3 year Associate Degree program post 12th grade in Information Technology. Currently, NIIT curriculum is embedded into both these programs across multiple Universities and Colleges in China. While the University system continues to teach the rest of the subjects that a student undergoes such as Chinese language, science etc to obtain a Bachelor Degree, the IT portion is completely from NIIT. The students get the degree or the associate degree from the University/Government and also receive a certificate from NIIT.

Mr. Rahul Patwardhan, CEO Designate, NIIT Ltd. called upon Mr. Qin Ru Pei, Vice Governor of Guizhou during his visit. Elaborating on the MoU, Mr. Qin Ru Pei, Vice Governor of Guizhou further emphasized on NIIT's key role as the training partner and estimated the requirement to be around 50,000 trained students over the next 5 years.

NIIT, a global leader in skills and talent Development, established its presence in China in 1997, becoming the first Indian IT enterprise to do so. Over the years, NIIT has been training skilled IT professionals for China's software outsourcing industry. With the support of its outstanding partners and institutions, it has trained more than 150,000 students in the country.

eBay India has enabled businesses for over 50,000 merchants of all sizes and it has been our constant endeavor to expand the seller base. However, the widening skill gap would become an impediment to the growth of the ecommerce industry. The ePro certification will not only build an employable workforce, but will also aid Government's endeavor to skill 500 million4 people by 2022, who can contribute towards the 'Make in India' campaign.

Shivan Bhargava
Group President - Skills
and Careers Group,
NIIT Limited

At NIIT we have always believed in offering programs customized to the evolving needs of the industry. With the changing face of retail, where online platforms are gaining popularity among consumers, we perceive immense opportunity in the ecommerce space. Hence we have joined hands with eBay India to empower local entrepreneurs with global aspirations, by bringing them at par with the international standards.

Certification to help increase employability and bridge skills divide

By forging this strategic partnership with NIIT, we look forward to taking the SWEBOK and other IEEE educational and skill development programs global. We are glad to have come together with NIIT to reduce the skill gap among engineering graduates throughout India.

Amitabh Lahiri

NIIT Limited.

With an aim to bring engineers at par with the global industry standards, we plan to train over 40,000 engineers in SWEBOK training programs in next three years.

Harish Mysore
Director, India

Employers will value the IEEE and NIIT joint certificates globally,

Unique partnership to promote technical education and skill development based on IEEE Computer Society's global programs

NIIT, a leading global talent development corporation, and IEEE Computer Society, the computing professional's single, unmatched source for technology information, inspiration and collaboration, entered into a global alliance to provide training based on the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) to create quality engineers to meet the industry's requirement for job-ready talent.

Although nearly 1,300,000 engineers study in universities in India, around 80 percent of these graduates are considered not job-ready by employers. According to a recently published National Employability Report called Engineering Graduates - 2014, released by Aspiring Minds Assessment Private Limited only 18.43% engineers are employable for the software engineer-IT services role, while just 3.95% are trained to be directly deployed on projects. For core jobs in mechanical, electronics/electrical and civil jobs, only a mere 7.49% engineers are employable.

Therefore, there is an acute demand in the industry for a well-trained talent pool, certified by an internationally recognized neutral body. As IEEE Computer Society's Premier Registered Education Provider, NIIT will introduce IEEE Computer Society's suite of globally acclaimed, ISO compliant SWEBOK training content and assessment for the industry, institutions and individual students.

SWEBOK coursework is created by subject-matter experts from industry and academia globally, based on requirements from the industry, to reduce the skill gap. NIIT and IEEE Computer Society will provide three courses based on the SWEBOK certification:

  • The SWEBOK Certificate Program (SCP)
  • The Certified Software Development Associate (CSDA)
  • Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP)

While the SCP certification gives engineering students an excellent foundation as they embark on a career in software development, the CSDA and CSDP certifications act as a stepping stone to a brighter future for working professionals. Several leading organizations globally and in India have integrated or adopted SWEBOK course content into their corporate training, for both graduate students and experienced engineers. A team of subject-matter expert volunteers around the globe continuously contribute to SWEBOK to keep it current.

Given that the industry is expected to witness robust growth in the coming years, the need for certified job-ready professionals will be even more critical. The Industry body NASSCOM expects the Indian IT sector to grow to US $300 billion by 2020, driven by new business models, service lines and availability of talents with higher value additions. Against this backdrop, this unique tie-up between NIIT and IEEE Computer Society will offer cutting-edge programs to improve the quality of engineering graduates.

Both NIIT and IEEE Computer Society will work closely to promote IEEE Computer Society courses and drive SWEBOK certifications among engineering students.
