Post Budget reactions for the Education and Skill sector

BY:- Vijay K Thadani, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, NIIT Ltd.

We welcome the focus on education, skills, job creation and entrepreneurship in this budget. Emphasis on promoting excellence in higher education on a level playing field by identifying 10 public and 10 private institutions, is a good move.

Digital repository for validation of qualification will provide a great boost to high employment industries, such as the IT sector. Also, upgradation of National Career Services will produce more effective connection of jobs with skills.

The maturity of digital technology and its role in the society is visible from the fact that MOOCs will be used for mentoring new entrepreneurs.

Pre-Budget expectations for the Education & Training sector

By Mr. Rahul K Patwardhan, CEO
NIIT Limited, a global leader in skills & talent development

Online education is a fast growing global growth arena, both in formal education and vocational training. We hope that the government will introduce measures to ensure a level playing field for the highly regulated Indian online education and training companies against the much larger funded global players who are entering the Indian market aggressively, in an unregulated manner as far as Indian taxation regime is concerned.

Further, we hope that the Finance Minister will announce specific measures in the Union Budget to help make education and skilling more affordable to the masses. Skill India and Digital India are two key and highly ambitious initiatives of Government of India, and in the forthcoming budget we expect specific Indirect tax rebates for the companies and its partners who are working towards making these initiatives a success. Government has set an ambitious target of skilling 500 million people by 2022. In a country where less than 4% of the population are formally skilled, FM needs to substantially increase fund allocation to the sector to draw youth to the skilling programmes. FM should also spell out specific incentives and policy framework to boost the start-up sector by announcing tax rebate and allocating more funds for the development of the sector.

GST is another much awaited Indirect tax reform, which will boost the economy. We are expecting a firm roadmap from the Government for its implementation. We also hope there would be changes in the Income Tax policy frame that will allow us to get quick refund for the excess taxes paid.

NIIT.tv - a disruptive innovation by NIIT, entered into a significant partnership with SASTRA University

Udai Singh,
Chief Strategy Officer,
NIIT Ltd

We launched NIIT.tv with an aim to make available cutting-edge skill based training to every digitally connected citizen of India, by removing the four constraints of time, space, language and money. Through this significant tie-up with SASTRA University we will now use the platform to provide relevant skill sets to aspiring engineers and make them job ready for today's competitive corporate environment.

- To now offer industry-aligned support programs in BTech and MTech to improve learning and employability of engineering graduates
- High quality educational videos to reach out to engineering students across 140 countries, for free

NIIT.tv – a disruptive innovation by NIIT, will now offer support to students pursuing BTech and MTech degree programs by helping them with their curriculum and beyond, with an aim to improve employability and job readiness of engineering graduates in India. To this end NIIT.tv has entered into a significant tie-up with SASTRA University, one of the leading universities in India, situated in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Sessions delivered by expert faculty members of the University will be broadcast on NIIT.tv, an internet based learning portal. Programs on Biomedical Nanotechnology, Biosensors and Control Systems will be available in the initial stage and will soon expand to other engineering, management & law disciplines including coaching for competitive exams like GATE, etc.

NIIT.tv is an internet TV portal that can be accessed on a computer, tablet or smartphone anytime, anywhere. It is a democratic digital learning initiative, backed by NIIT's strong Educational Technology framework, that was launched in October last year with an aim to bring high quality training from its classrooms to every digitally connected learner, for free, at any time, place and language of their choice. The platform has received an overwhelming response with a total of 1,70,000 registered users from 142 Countries. This has prompted NIIT to go beyond its programs and provide support in other areas of higher education through strategic tie-ups.

As per a recent India Skill Report (ISR), compiled by Wheebox, PeopleStrong, LinkedIn and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), only 37 per cent of Indian graduates are employable. Educational institutions train millions of youngsters but corporates often complain that they do not get the necessary skill and talent required for a job. Therefore, it is essential that the engineering programs evolve and become more job-centric.

Between NIIT and SASTRA University, learners go through a complete multi-modal digital platform, experience free - tutorials, videos, live synchronous classes, e-books, interactivity, discussion forums, assessment, etc., thus making the combined ecosystem the richest, widest and the deepest learning environment for students pursuing BTech and MTech programs. The two learning destinations will enable a more seamless experience for their respective users in their pursuit to find learning material that is more suited to the skill sets required by the industry.

To start with, sessions on Biomedical Nanotechnology, Biosensors and Control Systems will be available on NIIT.tv. These two programs are aligned with the need to focus on emerging & niche areas while more programs will be added from not only engineering clusters but also from management & law to make the engagement interdisciplinary & multidimensional keeping in mind the workplace demands.

Dr. S. India, with a strong technology ecosystem of MNC R&D centers, service providers, IT global in-house centers and startups, is well placed to play a key role in the digital era. Indian talent can potentially power the digital transformation for enterprises around the world, and become a moon-shot economy. According to a survey, India is home to a digitally ready talent pool of 500,000 engineers suitable to execute digital transformation projects. This is expected to increase to over a million engineers trained in digital transformation technologies by 2020. Owing to this massive growth in demand, already today any entry-level and experienced professional with Digital Transformation Skills attracts 50% to 60% higher salaries than those with traditional IT skills.

Information technology has changed the way people work and the next ten years will be about transforming the businesses across all industry sectors. According to industry experts, digitally transformed organizations are 26% more profitable than their industry competitors. Global Spending on digital transformation technologies is expected to cross $2.1 Billion by 2019. By 2018, 35% of IT resources will be spent to support the creation of new digital revenue streams, and by 2020 almost 50% of IT budgets will be tied to digital transformation initiatives. All of these indicate that Digital transformation is going to drive the next phase of growth in the IT Industry. In October 2015, NIIT launched a revolutionary initiative - StackRouteTM to create multi-skilled and multi-disciplinary full-stack programmers. StackRouteTM has received overwhelming response from startups and major IT companies alike. Armed with first-hand knowledge of the talent requirements of technology backed organizations and an established proof of success in servicing the stringent internal reskilling requirements of these firms, NIIT will now offer retail training programs in Digital Transformation Technologies under the DigiNxt portfolio, to young aspirants wishing to enter the digital services industry, as well as to young IT professionals wishing to reskill themselves for the new digital world.

According to MIT Centre for Digital Business, 77% of organizations consider missing digital skills as the key hurdle to their transformation strategy.
