AAN ZEE, January 19: DESPITE the fiercest winter storm to
hit Europe in many decades, Teimour Radjabov continued his
hot streak with a fourth win in five games in Corus Chess
Grandmasters tournament and coming in tied second a point
behind him is five-time champion Viswanathan Anand.
As Radjabov capitalized on a mistake from David Navarra for
a win that took his tally to 4.5 points, Anand beat an unlucky
Peter Svidler and moved into joint second place with 3.5 points.
Sharing the second place with Anand is Veselin Topalov.
In group C fifth round matches, Parimarjan Negi drew with
the top seed Michael Krasenkow and is now in tied third place
with four others including Krasenkow. In the fourth round,
Negi was stunned by lower rated Nadzheda Kosintseva.
Anand, the only five-time champion in Corus Chess history,
has used the rest day well to start off with a win that could
put him on road to another title win. The Anand-Svidler match
was among the earliest to finish and it was not a draw. In
a Ruy Lopez closed, Svidler was slightly worse off, but he
could have worked for a draw. Instead he overlooked a pawn
trick and found himself two pawns and resigned on the 21st
move.
Svidler erred a bit as early as 19th move and Anand moved
in. And then when Svidler fell for a trick, Anand was romping
home to a quick win.
Radjabov continued his winning run, but this time he was also
aided by Navarra’s mistakes. Navarra started a misjudged
tactical operation which ultimately cost him the game.
In the sixth round, Anand has black against Kramnik and then
has rounds against leader Radjabov and Topalov coming up.
But Anand has often picked up crucial points in second stage
against stronger opponents.
In Group C, Parimarjan Negi, the fourth seed, has logged three
points. In fifth round he drew his match with Krasenkow.
Many of the officials who travel to Wijk on a daily basis
were stuck as the train and plane services and even some buses
were cancelled. With winds in excess of 100 miles an hour,
the commentary sessions were cancelled and there was some
delay in play, too.
