ANAND SUFERS SHOCK DEFEAT IN FOURTH ROUND AT SAN LUIS

SAN LUIS, Argentina, October 2, 2005: FAVOURITE Viswanathan Anand suffered a shock defeat at the hands of defending champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov, also the lowest rated player in the field, in the fourth round of the in the US$ 1 million prize money World Chess Championship being played in San Luis, Argentina.

Anand, the NIIT Brand Ambassador, who was joint leader with Veselin Topalov has slipped to third spot, while Topalov, registered another fine win in fourth round over Michael Adams to go into sole lead with 3.5 points of four. His only draw was against Anand.

It was another action-packed day as all four games produced results. Topalov of Bulgaria crushed Michael Adams of England in a game that was in the English Symmetrical where the game lasted just 30 moves. Russian Peter Svidler got his second straight victory in the event, beating fellow Russian Alexander Morozevich in an interesting King’s Indian game.

Peter Leko beat fellow Hungarian Judit Polgar in 25 moves of a Sicilian Paulsen and improved his position after being at the bottom after three rounds.

Topalov leads with 3.5, while Svidler took his tally to 3 points with Anand at sole third with 2.5 points. Kasimdzhanov has 2 points while Hungarians Polgar and Leko are next with 1.5 points apiece. Morozevich and Adams are at the bottom of the table with one point each.

In a sharp and risky line in the Najdorf, Anand faced the English attack and seemed to be in trouble early as Kasimdzhanov exploited the imbalance in his rival’s side. He got an advantage in the middle game as Anand played riskily and got into a wrong plan. Kasim attacked Anand’s weakened king and the Indian star resigned soon thereafter.
