LUIS, Argentina, Oct 7, 2005: Viswanathan Anand made a strong
comeback in the eighth round outplaying Judit Polgar in a
Sicilian game that will go a long way in restoring his confidence
after two losses in the first half of the World Chess Championship
here.
Anand,
the NIIT Brand Ambassador, who had lost his seventh round
to Russian Alexander Morozevich scored his second win over
Polgar in the tournament. He had trounced her in the first
round also. Anand has now won three games, drawn three and
lost two for a plus one score. Anand has 4.5 points with six
rounds still remaining in the million dollar championship.
He is lying third, as Veselin Topalov, continues to lead at
seven points.
Bulgarian
Topalov maintained his two points lead over nearest rival
Peter Svidler of Russia after taking an easy draw with fourth
placed Peter Leko of Hungary. Topalov has seven points in
his kitty and is still way ahead in the eight-players double
round robin contest. Svidler is second with 5 points. Topalov
has won six games and drawn two.
Anand
(4.5) is followed by Leko and Morozevich on four points while
defending champion Kasimdzhanov (3) is next in line and is
now without any chance of retaining the crown he won last
year at Tripoli in Libya. In the seventh spot is Britain’s
Michael Adams and Judit Polgar is at the bottom of the tables
with just two points in her kitty.
Anand’s
win was one of the two decisive games of the day. Anand with
white repelled Polgar’s Sicilian Paulsen. Though Polgar
hung for 62 moves, Anand’s superiority was never in
doubt. Three of the four games were the in Sicilian and one
Queen’s Indian.
Morozevich
who has won two games in a row moved to four points and tied
with Leko in fourth place.
