LUIS, Argentina, Oct 11, 2005: Viswanathan Anand avenged his
defeat against Rustam Kasimjanov of Uzbekistan in the 11th
round as he made a bid to at least finish second in the FIDE
World chess championship here.
The fourth victory by the NIIT Brand Ambassador, Anand, enabled
him to come within two points of the leader Veselin Topalov
of Bulgaria, who survived a close game against the thus-far
struggling Michael Adams of England.
In
the other decisive game of the day, Peter Svidler, kept his
second place with a win over Alexander Morozevich of Russia.
Judit Polgar took a draw with fellow Hungarian Peter Leko.
Anand
is sole third at 6.5 points, two points behind the leader,
while Topalov the leader is at 8.5 and Svidler is at seven.
As three rounds remain, Topalov has a clear two point lead
and only if he loses at least two of those games, does anyone
have a chance of catching up or going ahead of him.
In
a Sicilian Najdorf, Anand simply outplayed Kasimjanov in just
29 moves. This clash was in sharp contrast to the first one,
where Anand had been stunned by Kasimjanov.
Svidler
repelled the Petroff defence by Morozevich in a long 70-move
game, while Admas had Topalov on the ropes from a Sicilian
Scheveningen. After 45 moves of an exciting game, Topalov
managed to keep his unbeaten streak going. Polgar and Leko
were engaged in a draw in Caro-Kann.
Morozevich
fell behind after an insipid loss against Svidler but still
maintains the sole fourth spot on 5.5.
