Dortmund Chess – Round 2 – Anand plays second straight draw

DORTMUND, June 25: Viswanathan Anand played a second straight draw at the Dortmund Super Grandmasters Chess tournament as he was held to a draw by Hungarian Grandmaster Peter Leko. Anand now has one point from two games in the Super GM event with eight players in the fray.

Vladimir Kramnik shot into the lead by defeating Israel's Boris Gelfand in a positional game in second round. He shares the lead with Russian Grandmaster Evgeny Alekseev who stunned Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan in the second round.

Against the NIIT Brand Ambassador Anand, Hungaarian Leko played the Marshall Attack against the Spanish opening. He put his forces against Anand's king by sacrificing a pawn. Anand was well prepared and reduced the attack by trading pieces. In the minor piece endame Anand enjoyed a pawn advantage but Leko had the bishop pair. The two agreed to a draw in 29 moves.

The game between German Grandmaster Arkadij Naiditsch and Norwegian prodigy GM Magnus Carlsen ended in a draw after a tense struggle.

Kramnik played a superb positional game to beat Boris Gelfand in a long game.

In the third round Anand will play with black pieces against Boris Gelfand. In the other games, Mamedyarov meets Kramnik, Carlsen clashes with Alekseev and Leko meets Naiditsch.
