The national chess contest saw widespread participation from around 7000 students from 500 schools all over the nation. Enthusiastic students from places as diverse as- Sibsagar in Assam to Surat in Gujarat and Pathankot in Punjab to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu enrolled for the competition, hoping for a chance to play with their Chess Ideal, lovingly referred by them as Vishy Anand.
The contest was organized by NIIT through its national network of centres. School students were encouraged to come forward and play Chess, as the game helps improve concentration and decision making abilities, thereby enhancing academic performance among children.
Commenting on the inter-link between Chess and academic performance, World Chess Champion, Viswanathan Anand said, “Chess is a great stimulant for significant intellectual development resulting in improved academic performance. I feel more and more students should be introduced to Chess during their formative years as it helps bring out their analytical skills.”
“Vish Come True, is yet another initiative by NIIT to introduce chess to students at a young age in order to develop their intellectual capabilities”, he added.
World Chess Champion, Anand, gave playing tips to young Chess enthusiasts and responded to their queries, using NIIT Imperia’s national network which is being used by premier business schools such as the IIMs (Ahmedabad, Indore, Kolkata) and others, to offer their executive management education programs to working professionals across the country.
Mr. G Raghavan, President, Global Individual Learning Solutions, NIIT said, “We have received an overwhelming response for the NIIT Vish Come True competition across India. This has been an ideal initiative that supports our endeavour to promote intellectual growth of students. It is also interesting to see the satellite based synchronous learning platform being used beyond the management education that we deliver across 22 locations. ”
NIIT Vish come True competition was extensively technology based both in terms of the actual game being played and the evaluation itself. Schools from far flung areas were assisted in enrolling by registering on www.niit.com/vct by the regional coordinators of NIIT. To facilitate further inclusion the competition was held across 300 NIIT centres, covering locations all over India. Every NIIT centre selected around 3 schools with one winner qualifying from each NIIT centre followed by 3 winners qualifying from each region. The judging process that happened simultaneously was carried online, thus reducing the time period.
NIIT provided varying levels of recognitions and rewards for both the participants and schools, ranging from a certificate of participation, chess sets with Vishy’s autograph to trophies with his autograph. The winners were awarded with Vishy signed Chess Boards and a Swift Program on IT from NIIT. The SWIFT programs from NIIT are the simplest and quickest way to get acquainted with basic IT skills and usages of the internet through simple fun filled programs.
