Finance Minister felicitates 1st Batch of Tax Return Preparers trained by NIIT

New Delhi, May 23, 2007: At the convocation ceremony of the first batch of Tax Return Preparers held in the capital today, the Hon’ble Finance Minister, Mr. P Chidambaram felicitated the Top 20 students and certified them as ‘Tax Return Preparers’. Under the Department of Income Tax’s, Tax Return Preparer Scheme (TRPS), NIIT was mandated to train 5000 graduates on Income Tax filing procedures to create a pool of certified professionals to help file returns of income tax assessees in the lower income category.
The Finance Minister was joined by Ms. Indira Bhargava, Chairman and Mr. A.J. Majumdar, Member (L& C), from the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
Addressing students, the Minister highlighted the dual benefit of the scheme—that of providing a career opportunity for large number of country’s youth as well as widening the base of income tax payers in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, NIIT Chairman Mr. Rajendra S. Pawar said, “We are happy to receive the support of the Finance Minister which will go a long way in motivating a large number of young people in India.
“Through NIIT’s reach and expertise in training delivery, graduates in remote corners of the country now have a good opportunity to gain self-employment and work towards a better future”, he added.
The first batch of 5000 TRPs underwent rigorous training programme by NIIT, on Income Tax filing procedures and popular office applications on computers, across 108 locations in the country. The successful candidates, now referred as ‘Certified Tax Return Preparers’ would obtain a unique Identification Number from the Income Tax department.
To help TRPs file returns, a helpdesk manned by a tax expert has been set up. Additionally, an advertising campaign announcing the services and availability of TRPs will be launched nationally. Further details about TRPs is available through a dedicated portal www.trpscheme.com and a call centre.
