Minister S.S. Palanimanickam felicitates 1st Batch of Tax Return Preparers trained by NIIT
Bangalore, May 23, 2007: At the convocation ceremony of the first batch of Tax Return Preparers held in the city today, the Hon’ble Minister of State-Revenue, Mr. S.S. Palanimanickam felicitated the students and certified them as ‘Tax Return Preparers’. Under the Department of Income Tax’s, Tax Return Preparer Scheme (TRPS), NIIT was mandated to train 5000 graduates on Income Tax filing procedures to create a pool of certified professionals to help file returns of income tax assessees in the lower income category.
Of the 1,074 graduates who were trained by NIIT in the South, 95 candidates were certified as Tax Return Preparers from Bangalore and adjoining areas at this event.
The Minister was joined by Mr. R. Prasad, Member (Revenue) and Mr. S.S. Iyer, Chief Commissioner of IT and others from the Income Tax department.
Speaking on the occasion, NIIT Chief Operating Officer Mr. P. Rajendran said, “We are happy to receive the support of the Minister which will go a long way in motivating a large number of young people in the country.
“Through NIIT’s reach and expertise in training delivery, graduates in remote corners of the country now have a good opportunity to gain self-employment and work towards a better future”, he added.
The first batch of 5000 TRPs underwent rigorous training programme by NIIT, on Income Tax filing procedures and popular office applications on computers, across 108 locations in the country. The successful candidates, now referred as ‘Certified Tax Return Preparers’ would obtain a unique Identification Number from the Income Tax department.
To help TRPs file returns, a helpdesk manned by a tax expert has been set up. Additionally, an advertising campaign announcing the services and availability of TRPs will be launched nationally. Further details about TRPs is available through a dedicated portal www.trpscheme.com and a call centre.
