NIIT’s Digital Art Festival showcases creative talent among school kids

HP CM inaugurates the unique exhibition and felicitates winners

Shimla, February 20, 2007: In line with their joint effort of promoting IT and IT assisted education at the school level, the Himachal Pradesh government and NIIT organised a unique painting competition for children in the state government schools, who are being taught computers by NIIT. Only this time the canvas was the software ‘Paint or Powerpoint’ and the paint brush was the mouse.

The paintings, displayed at the ‘Digital Art Festival 2006’ was inaugurated by the state CM Raja Virbhadra Singh in the city today. The digitally created paintings by young- learners can be seen not only as a piece of art but they bear ample testimony to how computers can be used effectively in children’s overall skill development.

While felicitating winners of the painting competition who came from 282 Government schools in 12 districts of HP where NIIT has been providing computer education in partnership with the state under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan initiative, the CM highlighted the importance of computer education for better career prospects.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. L. Balasubramanian, President, NIIT K12, said, “We are delighted by the overwhelming response to this initiative. It is heartening to see such creative application of acquired computer skills by kids. We at NIIT believe that computer education not only helps raise the standard of learning in school, it also increases the performance level of students in other subjects”.

 Mr. B.M. Nanta, MD, SSA & Director, Elementary Education, HP, who was also present on the occasion, highlighted the state government’s effort in promoting computer education at the school level.

NIIT through its K-12 initiative is reaching 1.4 million kids in over 4000 government and private schools, equipping them with crucial IT skills to prepare them for tomorrow’s knowledge society. NIIT is working actively to make computers an intrinsic part of the lives of children and also those of the socially and economically challenged sections of the society, who may never have had a chance to integrate with the emerging 21st century environment, to give a better prospect to their future. NIIT has been providing computer and computer-aided education in government schools in ten states across the country.
