UNESCO recognition for NIIT’s Innovation in ICT in Education

New Delhi, July 10, 2008: NIIT, a leading Global Talent Development Corporation was honoured for its state-of-the-art ‘Smart Science Station—Computer Aided eXperience Kit’—at UNESCO’s Annual Convention on ‘Innovative Practices in ICT in Education’, at Bangkok recently.

‘Smart Science Station—Computer Aided eXperience (CAX)’ kit, part of NIIT’s eGuru solution, is a breakthrough innovation in teaching strategies for Science in schools. The kit enhances learning capabilities of children by making Science fun and interesting, thus improving academic performance. It offers a range of computer aided Science experiments covering topics such as Heat, Electricity and Sound. The innovative learning solution has already been installed in 50 schools across the country and has received encouraging response from teachers and students.

Funded by the Japanese Funds-in-Trust, UNESCO’s Innovative Practices in ICT in Education project aims to identify, document and share innovative ICT in Education practices across the world.

NIIT, the only Indian company to win the ‘Certificate of Commendation’ in the Education Planner and Administrator Category, was amongst 146 entries from 19 countries received by UNESCO.

According to Mr P Rajendran, Chief Operating Officer, NIIT, “We are delighted that NIIT has brought India on the global map of Innovation in ICT in Education. It is our consistent endeavour to offer innovative solutions to enhance the quality of education by aiding school management, teachers and students with better teaching and learning methodologies.”

NIIT’s Smart Science Station (CAX kit) developed by the research and development team of NIIT’s School Learning Solutions business, enhances the effectiveness of teaching and learning Science concepts for Grades 7 to 12, in schools. When interfaced with a computer, the kit transforms into a Computer-aided Science Station for students to perform and simulate a wide range of experiments in a child-friendly and safe environment.

NIIT has been at the forefront of providing computer and computer aided education in schools. This Global Talent Development Corporation has provided computer-based learning solutions to over 7700 government and private schools, and touches over 2.3 million school students, equipping them with crucial IT skills.

NIIT programs are designed to enable students to acquire skills necessary for the knowledge economy and their pursuit for higher studies and gainful employment. NIIT’s computer aided education programs provide effective learning environment for children in subjects like Mathematics, Science, English and Social Studies, with special tools to promote critical thinking and analytical skills leading to student centric learning.

Recognizing the potential of Information and Communication Technologies to transform the teaching–learning process in the non-formal and formal education space, and its potential in changing the way teachers and learners gain access to knowledge and information, NIIT’s ICT in Education initiative focusses on using IT to enhance the reach and quality of teaching and learning.

For over a decade, NIIT has worked with Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and West Bengal to offer computer education in schools. Additionally, NIIT has also partnered with many private schools in the country to help students discover the pleasure of learning through computers
