WORLD CHESS CHAMPION VISWANATHAN ANAND LAUNCHES NIIT INTER-COLLEGE CHESS COMPETITION IN WEST BENGAL
- 10,000 Students Across the State to Participate in the Competition
- Inaugurates State-of-the-Art NIIT Centre at Kasba in Kolkata
Kolkata, June 14, 2010: NIIT, leading Global Talent Development Corporation and Asia’s largest IT trainer, today announced the launch of NIIT Inter-College Chess Competition in West Bengal. The competition was flagged off by World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand at a press conference today. Also present on the occasion was Surojit Biswas, Zonal Head, Individual Learning Solutions-East, NIIT Ltd.
10,000 students from 150 colleges across 14 districts in West Bengal will participate in the mega NIIT Inter-College Chess Competition. The winner will be awarded with a Competition Trophy and letter of appreciation from Anand. Special benefits on cutting edge courses from NIIT will be also made available to the top 10 performers.
Speaking on the occasion World Champion Viswanathan Anand remarked, “It gives me great pleasure to announce the NIIT Inter-College Competition in West Bengal. I am delighted to learn that a huge number of college goers in the state are excited about the competition. NIIT has played a key role in popularizing chess amongst youth in India. I am confident that initiatives like this will sharpen young minds and ensure that India reigns supreme in the world of chess.”
NIIT and World Champion Viswanathan Anand has been working together to make the game of chess popular among school and college goers in India. NIIT MindChampions Academy, a joint initiative of NIIT and Anand to initiate young minds into the World of Chess, today enjoys phenomenal participation from students across India.

Later in the day Anand inaugurated the state-of-the-art NIIT Kasba Centre at P-40, Phase III, Kasba Industrial Estate, Near Ruby, Opp. Manjulika ‘B’ Housing Complex, Kolkata. With the launch of this new centre NIIT now has 17 centres operational in the city. NIIT Kasba that houses state-of-the-art machine rooms and class rooms offers NIIT’s complete portfolio of IT education for career aspirants and software professionals. The centre also offers industry endorsed multiple track GNIIT programme, NIIT Edgeineers, and short term SWIFT courses among others.
