Mumbai, April 25, 2008: Making his first public appearance in Mumbai after being crowned the World Chess Champion 2007, NIIT MindChampion Viswanathan Anand today arrived in the city to spend time with young chess enthusiasts in the city. Anand played chess with children of Don Bosco High School and NIIT, and also spent time with few underprivileged children of Each One Teach One Charitable Foundation.

NIIT MindChampion Viswanathan Anand also donated computers to the charitable foundation and Don Bosco School, to enable the kids gain basic computer skills. Each One Teach One Charitable Foundation is actively involved with helping the underprivileged children come up to speed through education.

Sharing his success mantra that transforms ordinary players into champions, World No. 1 and NIIT MindChampion Viswanathan Anand said, “Success in today’s age is determined by an individual’s ability to outperform the competition with information and knowledge. This coupled with determination, passion, focus and practice can help one excel in any field.”

Highlighting the need for computer literacy, he said “Knowledge of computers has become a basic need for performing in any field—be it academics, sports or work place”.

NIIT is working actively to make computers an intrinsic part of the lives of children and also those from socially and economically challenged sections of the society, who may never have had a chance to integrate with the emerging 21st century environment, to give a better prospect to their future.

World Champion Viswanathan Anand is engaged with students in over 5000 Government and Private schools to help them initiate into the world of Chess, through the NIIT MindChampions Academy. The Academy has fostered nearly 5280 clubs with over 100,000 students as its members across the network of schools where NIIT offers computer-aided learning. The young members of the Academy get to play Chess in both online and offline format and are given coaching using NIIT’s technology.
