COVID-19 has struck the mainframe of human society with a hammer and exposed the prevalent redundancies of each industry. Whether it is our supply dependency or the lack of a digital ecosystem to support operational throughputs, “business as usual” needs a new definition. As though destined in the stars, it is no coincidence that 5G is at the cusp of its debut with tower installations to support the network in full swing globally. And where the groundwork is yet to be laid, Governments are opening up preliminary tenders for 5G businesses to showcase the potential and ROI of the technology.

Manufacturing and Supply Chain

There has been a lethal spike in incorporating new healthcare businesses due to the rise in demand for medical essentials such as sanitizers, N-95 masks, and ventilators. Coincidentally, a major chunk of this pie comes from the legacy establishments whose revenues were adversely impacted by the lockdowns. Shifts of such scale aren’t everybody’s cup of tea. Alongside credit, they require time management, something that will certainly be guaranteed by the enterprise use of 5G technology.

Why?

5G is another name for speed. In its current iteration, the 5th generation of broadband cellular networks will accelerate the progression of technologies such as IoT devices, cloud computing, and Artificial Intelligence among others. Imagine a data warehouse resting on a secure cloud, and periodically refined by AI algorithms to chart an empirical roadmap for R&D efforts. The capability to automate more, faster, will strengthen the resolve of business owners to shift manufacturing lines to creating newer products.

With the time to market reduced substantially, logistical adjustments and supply chain modifications will be effectuated with minimum risk on revenues.

Smart Cities & Public Safety

The danger of community transmission forced cities to limit the freedom of movement for people and go under total lockdown mode. This, to avoid overwhelming healthcare facilities and running out of space for patients. Regions that lifted the lockdowns, to spur an economic recovery, are prone to showing returning waves of the virus.

How can 5G help find a solution?

5G combined with analytics can be leveraged to identify community hotspots. The concerned authorities could either station officers to maintain social distancing in such battleground areas or offload the supervision entirely on automated drones. With increased transmission speeds the possibility of seeing driverless cars is drawing near, in course mitigating the chances of human-to-human virus spread. Reliable predictions made possible with the enablement of 5G services would empower city planners to have a holistic view of things and officiate the corresponding measures for public safety.

Healthcare

Let us not forget the most central aspect of our lives in our discourse on 5G, personal health. The enforced lockdowns brought into the fray medical practitioners online, some for the first time, prescribing through video conferencing. Lest people noticed, the call quality isn’t that great. Optimum 5G data transmission speeds are validated to be about 1 Gbps. With this view, 5G would render HD quality video conferencing effective augmenting the still-developing sectors of Telemedicine and mobile health.

Similarly, thermal cameras are not new to airports. Yet, with the onset of 5G and thereafter even more powerful AI algorithms, the same devices could be augmented to process more data. Samples of such 5G-powered devices are capable of scanning 20 people every 30 milliseconds.

The pandemic struck with menacing speed the healthcare global infrastructure that had little to no time, to fall back on contingency plans. This made it imperative to set up additional hospitals especially in peripheral towns with low network connectivity. Given the dire need to share data with zero to no interruption, 5G-enabled wireless connectivity will bridge the chasm between the underprivileged sections of society and advanced healthcare.

The Road Ahead

It doesn’t take a genius to measure the moral, ethical, societal, and business impact 5G will embody. Genius would be an ask to get the network upon its heels and running on toes.
