1981
- Incorporated on Dec 2, 1981.
- Promoted as National Institute of Information Technology.
1982
- NIIT operations commenced in Bombay, Delhi and Chennai in March 1982.
- Introduced Multimedia technology in education.
- Introduced Multimedia technology into Education.
1983
- Education Centre set up in Bangalore.
- Corporate Training programs introduced.
1984
- IT Consultancy services started.
- NIIT's Executive Development packages were recognised by the University of Michigan, USA.
1985
- Head Office integrated at New Delhi.
- NIIT crossed Rs.1 crore barrier.
1986
- Software Product Distribution started under 'Insoft' brand.
- Project 2.0 revamp of Education programs.
1987
- Education Centre set up in Calcutta, Hyderabad.
- Conceived the Franchising model of Education.
- First 9 Franchise Centres launched in state capitals, large towns.
1988
- The birth of an NIIT-ian -- a branding for NIIT alumni.
- NIIT set up an additional regional office in Pune.
- Instructional Research & Development group formed.
1989
- NIIT set up an additional centre in Pune, Bombay, Madras & Delhi.
- LAN with 5 nodes.
- The Bhavishya Jyoti Annual Scholarships instituted.
- First Annual Day, Theme - Year of Big Bang.
- Computer Aided Software Engineering 89 (CASE) Conference.
1990
- The name of the company changed from Pace Education Limited to NIIT Limited with effect from 16th November 1990.
- NIIT set up new metro centres at Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta.
- Created the Computer drome to provide "unlimited" computer time to students.
- Carry PC concept launched for cities where computerdrome facility was not available.
